Roger Federer: Tennis Star a Lock to Win Hometown Tournament

After a brilliant defeat of Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci and being named Australia's most popular athlete, Swiss tennis star Roger Federer is one step closer to clinching his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament.

Wednesday was just another day at the office for Federer, who took Bellucci down 6-3, 6-7 (6) and 7-5 in Basel, Switzerland to advance to the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament. The top-seeded Federer saved four consecutive set points in the second set tiebreaker before Bellucci eventually tied the match.

But when it came to match point, Federer, who held serve throughout, struck the decisive break-point that helped him earn the victory.

The 31-year-old stud hasn't shown any indication of letting up in the ATP tournament, as he decimated Germany's Benjamin Becker in the first round with straight set victories of 7-5 and 6-3.

Playing before his home crowd, Federer is easily the favorite to win the Swiss tourney. There's something about hosting a tournament that pushes athletes to another level and we're seeing that take place right before our eyes with Federer. Tiger Woods has shown us plenty of times that hosting your own tournament can easily translate into wins.

If you've been able to catch a glimpse of Federer during the ATP tournament, I think you'll agree that he's a lock to win his sixth Swiss Indoors title. Though he wasn't as dominant in the second round as he was in the first, Federer has now been battle-tested and came out victorious, giving him the edge entering the quarterfinals.

It still remains to be decided as to who the Swiss star will match up against in the quarterfinals, but it will either be France's Benoit Paire or Poland's Lukasz Kubot in the final eight on Friday. While both Paire andKubot have respectably earned their way to a chance to face the top-ranked Federer, neither of them is playing at the level Federer is, and neither has the energy of a hometown crowd behind them.

Come Friday, you can expect Federer to be another step closer to earning a sixth straight Swiss Indoors Title.
